He captained the Regina Victorias when they won the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League championship, going on to win the national Allan Cup championship in 1914. Abbott also excelled in lacrosse, rugby, football and basketball. He starred for Regina when it won the Western Canadian rugby championship in 1915.〔http://sasksportshalloffame.com/inductees/captain-edward-lyman-hick-abbott-mcbar/〕 Abbott was a law student and senior civil servant in the Saskatchewan Provincial Government when World War I broke out. He volunteered in September, 1915, and went overseas as a Lieutenant with the 68th Battalion (Regina) of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF).〔 In July 1915, Abbott was promoted to Captain with the 52nd Battalion (New Ontario), CEF.〔 Abbott was awarded the Military Cross with Bar, before he was killed in action while serving with that unit.〔〔 He is interred at the New British (military) Cemetery in Roye, France.〔〔http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/canadian-virtual-war-memorial/cem?cemetery=64201〕 The Abbott Cup, emblematic of Western Canadian Junior Hockey championship, was created in his memory in 1919.
